Photographing My First Wedding
I know some of you are calling bullshit on my title, but technically it’s true. While I’ve taken some good pictures at weddings before, it’s never been my responsibility to capture the priceless moments of someone’s wedding as the “official photographer”. Yet that’ll be my title (aside from sister-in-law) at Celeste & Mike’s wedding on October 8th. I know that Celeste is the type of person that’s not fussy & will appreciate any pictures I give her. She said she’s so low key that if it were up to her, they wouldn’t care much about pictures, but they know the rest if the family will. She knows I have a nice camera, she liked the pictures I took at Zachary & Beatrice’s wedding, and she’s seen other pictures I’ve taken & likes my eye for photos well enough. So while Celeste isn’t asking the world of my photos, I still want to give her the world in them. Luckily, Bridget volunteered to help. She’s got a nice camera & some ideas for shots. I’ve been researching like a mad woman looking for tips on wedding pictures, suggest shot lists, you name it. I’ve been using Pinterest to save pictures of weddings I’ve found online that I like. You can see my pin board at http://pinterest.com/blinkstarmedia/celeste-s-wedding-shots/ (I’m pretty sure anyone can view it without logging in). My boss Forrest got me into Evernote and I started my shot list there & another note full of links to articles with tips, which I’ll share with Bridget too. A lot of the sites I read are saying “if you’re not prepared for the shoot be prepared to fail” & no one can accuse me of not being prepared here damn it! I even bought a deal on LivingSocial for a Jump Start w/ DSLR class at a local camera shop next week in an attempt to learn some mo tricks with my camera before game time. I rented a lens for Affiliate Summit East a couple weeks ago and I love it to death, so i have a feeling that I’ll either be dropping $600-$700 on that lens of my own or shelling out the $75 to rent it again for the wedding. For those of you that k ow anything about lenses, its a 18mm-200mm beauty. I also registered for a couple classes through Chabot College for an intro to DSLR photography & using photoshop to enhance photos. I’ve taught myself a lot about photoshop, but its very layout & graphics based, so I’m excited to learn more about enhancing my photos specifically. Both are one night classes that I hope are well worth the $50 each investment, but they’ not until November. At least they’re before we go to South Carolina to visit dad again after Thanksgiving. So getting back to the topic at hand. See a wedding pic you love, send it my way. Have tips, share them! Part of my desire to do well is a personal retribution - I had a friend who was interested in photography shoot my wedding and regretted it a bit upon seeing how some of the traditional posed shots turned out. But then again anyone who knows me well knows that there’s a lot about my wedding I’d do differently if given a second chance and bigger budget. I also want her to be proud o the shots, and get more than the “pretty good” shots she may expect - I want to deliver “WOW” shots. I suppose I should relieve some of this pressure I’ve put on myself and start working on the wedding present I’m making her since she’s officially getting married a month from today! Yeah, no pressure there either lol. At least I can work on it on the 10 hr train ride (each way) in store for me on the 18th & 22nd going to & coming home from CJU in Santa Barbara if the wifi the Amtrak site promises on the train doesn’t work :)
